Abstract

A list of the habit, life form, inflorescence type, flower colour, fruit type, dispersal agents and distribution range is presented for 54 weed spp. from 23 families associated with tobacco crops in the Yar Hussain region of Mardan District, Pakistan. Samples were collected from 20 fields of 9 different tobacco growing areas during April 1982. Major weeds occurring at 100% at all sites studied were Cynodon dactylon andCyperus difformis. Weed spp. reaching 100% constancy on at least one of the 9 areas studied were Anagallis arvensis, Chenopodium murale, Coronopus didymus, Medicago polymorpha, Melilotus indicus and Veronica biloba. In addition to these spp. constancy values of 100% were also recorded for Capsella bursa-pastoris, Chenopodium album, Convolvulus arvensis, Fumaria parviflora, Oxalis corniculata andStellaria media. Of the weed spp. sampled, 70.91, 23.66, 3.66 and 1.81% were therophytes, hemicryptophytes, chamaephytes and geophytes, resp. Results are discussed in terms of tobacco cultivation methods.
